In film beyond film

the ontological primacy of woman

Fabio Vighi

pp. 203-236

In this final section we enter a microcosm that is thoroughly delivered from the masculine logic of "knowledge through exclusion". Woman here has no secret anchoring in enjoyment. For her, enjoyment is a ciel ouvert, it overlaps with the enjoyment of the big Other. What elevates woman beyond man is the paradox of a perforated whole, a whole that is not ashamed of revealing its holes, through which she verifies the non-existence of the big Other. For this reason, woman is in film beyond film, both fully included in its symbolic domain and in excess of it, belying the emptiness of its foundations.
