The rapid, and hitherto unprecedented, spread of, and changes within, the English language across the four corners of the globe have been the subject of investigation of linguists, sociologists, philosophers, culture theorists, and scholars in diverse fields. This paper examines the study of glocalized varieties of English, first focusing on a description of research on New Englishes over the past several decades. Next, the author focuses on the attitudes of students and teachers across the world to New Englishes scholarship as it pertains to the language classroom. The paper concludes with a reflection on the legitimacy of calls for a wider acceptance of glocalized varieties of English, even within academic contexts. Focusing on the impact of scholarly debate on the use of glocalized Englishes in different contexts on the actual stakeholders—students of English in different parts of the world—the author questions the seriousness of the voices advocating for the wider recognition and use of glocalized Englishes, when these same voices do not use the glocalized varieties in their own writing, preferring, instead, to follow the conventions of standard written English.
