Transmediales Erzählen erschafft eine komplexe Erzählwelt (storyworld) mit einer Vielzahl von Figuren und Handlungssträngen in verschiedenen Medien – Film, Videospiel, Comic, Buch, Internet, selbst in der realen Welt. Während die klassische strukturalistische Erzähltheorie vom Werk ausgeht, spielt in transmedialen Erzählwelten der Rezipient eine zentrale Rolle: »To fully experience any fictional world, consumers must assume the role of hunters and gatherers, chasing down bits of the story across media channels, [...] and collaborating to ensure that everyone [...] will come away with a richer entertainment experience« (Jenkins 2008, 21).
