Complementarity and unity of knowledge

Arun Bala

pp. 249-257

This final chapter examines why scientists and philosophers have overwhelmingly ignored or dismissed Bohr"s call to widen the reach of complementarity by exploring its relevance to scientific disciplines outside the quantum domain in physics and its parallels in Eastern thought. It argues that Bohr himself must partially bear the blame for this curious indifference because he failed to give an adequate explanation to justify such an extension. But by tracing complementarity to the structure of grown properties this study vindicates Bohr"s wider epistemological project, and his lifelong conviction that complementarity can not only be enriched by drawing upon Eastern thought but also has profound implications for areas of scientific knowledge in biology, psychology, and the social sciences far beyond the atomic domain.
