The phenomenological analysis of the "worlds" of physician and patient reveals a fundamental distinction between the lived experience of illness and its conceptualization as a disease state. In particular, a distinction has been noted between meaning which is grounded in lived experience and meaning which represents an "abstraction" from lived experience.
