Discussions on the meaning of rationality in action

Helmut Staubmann, Victor Lidz

pp. 47-51

The protocol summarizes the discussions in two sessions that followed the presentation by Schumpeter . The diagram provides a visualization of the conceptual distinctions presented by Schumpeter , but also frames objections to, and further thoughts about, them put forward by the seminar participants. The conversations centered especially on the conception of the rationality of the observed actor and on empirically observable deviations from rational action. Schumpeter 's references to important economists and sociologists as well as such theoretical traditions as the physiocrats were also discussed extensively. The reader will note that passages in the discussion echo parts of Schumpeter 's essay and thus may represent his replies to comments of others. (Eds.)
