Jewish peoplehood education

This chapter will argue that (1) in both Israel and the Diaspora, Jewish youth seem to feel little existential need to belong to a Jewish collective (local or global), (2) The Jewish people has an existential and urgent need to instill a sense of belonging in its next generation if it wishes to survive, (3) the paradigm of Jewish peoplehood and the practice of Jewish peoplehood education, can respond effectively to the task of instilling a need to belong that can be shared by both Israeli and Diaspora young Jews. The chapter will review three educational models that currently exist and conclude by offering what might comprise essential components of a Jewish Peoplehood education paradigm, followed by research questions designed to move the Jewish peoplehood discourse forward.
